Convict Notes
Benjamin Bowater was 22 years old on arrival in VDL and his occupation was a "Glass Blower". Character bad, convicted before. Surgeon's Report: To be sent to a penal settlement by order of the Secretary of State. Benjamin was slightly pock-pitted, scars on right arm and wrist and 2 scars on back of left hand, brown eyes, black hair, 5'6 1/4" tall, single, nose has been broken and his native place was Birmingham. 24/12/1844: TOL March 1846: Free certificate. 26/1/1849 & 17/3/1849: Was a passenger from Launceston to Port Phillip (Free). 1850: Married Mary Ann Garven in Victoria. 18/6/1852: The Argus, Melb. Government Land Sale, bought a 2 rood allotment at Avenel, Victoria. 2/10/1855: Bought more land. 17/6/1856: Benjamin and his wife were robbed of money by Janet Wilson, who was found guilty and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment. 11/8/1875: Benjamin died at his residence, Adderley Street, West Melbourne aged 62. (The Argus, Melb.) At the time of his death Benjamin owned property in Spencer Street, also in Flemington Road and other property in Adderley St.
