Conduct Record. CON31-1-13. Murdered by Broughton & MacAlboy ?? in 1830. Taken from confession of B & McA. • Edward Broughton (28) - 5 August 1831- Hanged at Hobart for absconding from Macquarie Harbour; while on the run he had murdered and canonicalized William Coventry and two others • Matthew Macavoy - 5 August 1831 - Hanged at Hobart for absconding from Macquarie Harbour; while on the run he had murdered and canonicalized William Coventry and two others
From; Community Contributions in Edward Broughton Convict Record.;- In 1830 five men absconded from Macquarie Harbour, Richard Hutchinson per ‘Indefatigable’ 1812, William Coventry per ‘Atlas’ 1829, Edward Broughton per ‘Earl St. Vincent’ 1826, Patrick Fegan (no ship found – no Patrick Fagan arriving before 1831 on records) and Matthew McAvoy/McAlboy per ‘Castle Forbes’ 1820. Eventually they were starving and so Richard Hutchinson was killed by Broughton, he was cut up and eaten by the others, Fagan next struck William Coventry, did not kill him and so he was finished off by Broughton and McAvoy, and he was eaten as well. McAvoy next killed Fagan, he being young and foolish, so that he would not tell what had been done.
