On 4th March 1837, at the age of twelve, Richard was convicted for Highway Robbery and sentenced to serve fourteen years transportation. He was convicted along with William Lee, also on board. 22/5/1844: TOL 28/4/1846: Recommended for a CP 21/9/1847: CP Married Catherine, 6 children listed. Richard was the Licensee of the Cricket Ground Hotel, Ballarat. 17/8/1863: The Star, Ballarat: NEW INSOLVENT. (Schedule filed in Ballarat.) Richard Merry, of Ballarat, carpenter. Debt, 236 183 ld; assets, £88 13s; deficiency, £1485s ld; Causes of insolvency-Having lost a large sum of money whilst in occupation of the Cricket Ground Hotel, bad debts, having to pay large calls to theSouthern Cross Gold Mining Company. Solicitor, Mr Lewis. 4/9/1863 The Star, Ballarat: Richard Merry, Ballarat-Insolvent was examinedas to his disposal of six shares in the Southern CrossGold Mining Company. Insolvent had deposited the scrip with Mr Wildey as security for an advance of £80. The company subsequently extended their operations, and issued new scrip, and called in the old. Insolvent did not give new scrip to Wildey, but to Messrs Smith and Wynne, as security for other borrowed moneys. The meeting then closed. 1892: Richard died in Malvern, Victoria
