Built 1839 at Greenock, Scotland. Wood barque of 510 Tons. The 1848 voyage with Irish female convicts. The John Calvin, with 171 female convicts, arrived yesterday. She left London on the 26th December, and went to Kingston, when she took on board her prisoners, and left on the 24th January. There have been four deaths on board and three births, one infant still born. She did not touch any where and spoke no vessels for this place. Hobart Town Advertiser, 19 May 1848.

Son of Samuel Overton Married to Mary nee Proffit they had three small children when he was transported the youngest being baptised 3 May 1846 just 6 days before he sailed. He was convicted of a burglary in Tachbrook with three others

William was born in Leamington and was 27 years old on arrival in VDL. He did 2 years probabion on Norfolk Island and arrived in VDL per 'Tory' in June 1847. William had Grey eyes,light brown hair, 5’4” tall, scar on corner of left eye moles upper left arm moles on neck, Married, 2 children, can read and write, protestant. 18/2/1859: CP approved 1856: There is a marriage listed for William Henry Overton to Margaret McEntaggart at Spring Bay - no children listed. (Nothing else found about William Overton, so cannot be sure this is him.)
